5 Best Hard Drive Utilities for Windows 7 (Free)

Windows 7 comes with some powerful partitioning and defragging tools when compared to the earlier Windows versions. But there are lots of free and powerful tools available for Windows 7 to improve your hard drive performance.

Here is a list of 10 best hard drive utilities which are really useful and free.

1. EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition

Arguably the best disk partition software out there. It’s a freeware which includes the partition manager, disk & partition copy wizard and partition recovery wizard on MBR and GUID partition table. It allows users to re-size or move partition, extend system drive, split partition, merge partitions, copy disk & partition, redistribute free disk space, partition recovery and much more.

The free version covers just about everything a normal user required. What’s missing compared to the $40 pay version is support for server and 64-bit operating systems, tech support, and the ability to create a boot CD.

4. HD Tune

HD Tune is a free hard drive information utility. It can be used to measure the drive’s performance, scan for errors, retrieves the S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) and securely erase all data.

The HD Tune benchmark consists of simple read tests performed across the hard disk surface starting from the outside of the disk and moving to the inside. You’ll notice the drop in throughput (bad) and access times (good) as the head moves towards the inside of the disk. You can run the benchmark on an SSD but you might as well stop a quarter of the way through–an SSD can access any part of its memory in the same amount of time.

5. Recuva

If you have deleted a file accidentally or something malicious like a worm or virus has done it for you, Recuva will bring it. It’s a great small  undelete program, possibly the best on the market. Recuva is the only free recovery software I’ve found in this category.

Recuva has a nice-looking, simple interface as well as a wizard that will walk you through the recovery/undelete process. There are options for what type of files to search for as well as whether to enable the deep scan (sector scan) that will find files on damaged or reformatted disks.

If you just want a good un-delete program with a small disk footprint at free cost, then Recuva is what you’re looking for.
